The magic of the movies provides unusual outings in Paris

When it comes to unusual outings, Paris offers a wealth of choice. A recent idea that is catching on fast is that of film trails in the capital. This involves visiting the Parisian locations that form the backdrop to such much-loved films as The Da Vinci Code, La Vie en Rose, Hugo, The Devil Wears Prada, Midnight in Paris and many more. At each location you can check out the relevant scenes from the movie on your mobile device and learn more about the historical and architectural background of that particular place. To make it even easier and more fun for you, Les Parcours Cinéma mini-guides are available.

Follow the trails of your favourite films throughout Paris

Paris is a city in which movie magic has been made right from the very beginning. In 1895 the Lumière brothers used their newly created Cinématographe to show films of ordinary Parisian life to the public for the first time. In the audience for that first viewing was the stage illusionist Georges Méliès. He became so fascinated by the new medium and its potential for illusion that he used it to tell stories of fantasy and science fiction that became cinematic legend. If you’ve seen the wonderful Martin Scorsese movie, Hugo, than you’ll know about this pioneer and his influence upon early cinema.

Today hundreds of film shoots take place in the capital each year, and around 4,000 locations in and around Paris have been used as everything from backdrops to essential plot elements. You’ve probably seen how the great glass pyramid at the Louvre was used in The Da Vinci Code, and how the Eiffel Tower formed the setting for one of the thrill-packed set pieces in Rush Hour 3.

Now each of these movies and many more have their own pocket sized guide leaflets, issued by Mission Cinéma and available from Paris Tourist Information or as PDF files you can download. Each guide gives you a reproduction of the movie poster, credits and a plot summary. There are photographs of the key locations used in the films along with information about how each one relates to the plot and the architectural and historical details of that particular place. Each location is marked on a map so that you can follow the movie trail through the city. It’s great fun for the entire family.

This is your opportunity to see the city as you see it in your favourite movies. Whether it’s the banks of the Seine as shown in Ratatouille, the Louvre as featured in The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec or the streets of Paris today and yesteryear as wandered by Gil the writer in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, there are so many places to explore with Les Parcours Cinéma.

At the Cler Hotel we will be delighted to assist with advice and tips for making the most of your voyages of discovery.
